If you want a pumpkin that earns its keep, Small Sugar is a classic. It produces smooth-textured, smallish pumpkins with bright orange flesh and it’s often touted as one of the best varieties for pumpkin pie.

The vines stay fairly compact but don’t be fooled, each plant can produce around 4–6 fruit and hand pollination is recommended to help you get the best set.

For best results, prep free-draining, moderately fertile soil with compost before planting. It tolerates a range of soil types but it’s happiest around pH 6.5–7.0. Give it full sun and plenty of space. Plant it where it can trail away or set up a solid trellis if you want to grow it vertically.

Why you’ll love it

  • The pumpkin-pie one – bright orange flesh and a reputation for top-notch pie results

  • Hand pollination recommended – helpful if you want to maximise fruit set
  • Flexible growing – tolerates a range of soil types
  • Grow it your way – let it sprawl or train it up a sturdy trellis
