If vegetables had a fashion week, Romanesco would be on the runway. It’s part of the Brassica family, with a striking spiralling pattern and a taste/texture similar to broccoli and cauliflower. It’s also abundant in vitamins and minerals, so it’s not just a pretty face.

For best results, use free-draining soil enriched with compost and organic fertiliser, aiming for a soil pH of 6.5. Plant in full sun (it’ll tolerate part shade), and avoid planting brassicas in the same spot each year.

Why you’ll love it

  • Easy growing basics included – spacing 50–60cm, sow depth 0.5–1cm
