If you want a beetroot that just works, Beetroot – Beta vulgaris ‘Detroit’ is the old-school favourite for a reason. It’s been around since the 19th century, it’s reliable and it produces uniform, smooth beets with dark red, sweet flesh (the kind you actually want to eat).
Bonus points: the attractive foliage isn’t just pretty, you can pick it young and use it like salad greens.
Plant it in full sun to part shade in well-dug, free-draining soil (prep with compost and manure about a week before planting) and aim for a soil pH of 6.5–7.0. Sow direct at 1cm depth. Soaking the seeds overnight can help germination along.
